Jubilee Celebrating a Final Post

Hi there!

So, this is a slightly different post to my usual crafty goodness, but I thought I’d share some pics of our jubilee celebrations!

Preparations for the party began on Saturday, I baked 36 cupcakes using a basic vanilla sponge recipe which I am sure you can find online so I won’t post it here. As you can see I had 24 Union Flag cases (the other 12 were plain white cases).

Once I  had finished the baking for the day I started work on other preparations:  I painted my nails myself, which was ok if you don’t mind a bit of fiddly painting, I also did my fingernails, with Union Flag thumbnails and red fingernails, but I forgot to take a photo and I’ve removed it by now! It was quite quick and easy if you fancy doing the same thing for the upcoming olympic games; First you need a blue base (get a good solid bright blue), once that’s dry using a VERY THIN brush (you can buy these, or I used one from an eyeliner I wasn’t going to use) paint a white cross, and then add in the diagonal lines, I decided to do this very last minute and had to make do, but I’d recommend using french tip whitener. Finally, once the white is dry, add a very fine cross in red (+) (again I’d recommend a good solid bright red) and then add the diagonals, leaving a small gap like the flag has. I’d also recommend covering the lot with a topcoat or some clear nail varnish to stop it chipping.

After all this work (haha, it really didn’t take long, and of course I didn’t sit doing nothing while my layers dried) came the task of icing cupcakes! Now I’d never done this before, and I was a little nervous about my first “swirl icing” endeavour on such a large scale! I did however spend a little bit of time talking to people and visiting a few sites online to assure myself I could do it! I made a simple butter icing, do you want the ingredients? Ok, Butter, and er Icing Sugar. Yep complicated huh! How much kinda depends on what you need! I needed quite a lot, but I did each batch separately and in different colours, (food colouring) so when it came to adding liquid, I simply used less butter. To get a good swirl, I used a star tip on a piping syringe. I love the “don’t use a round plain tip” advice online, using these produces “poo cake” for lack of a better expression. And looks pretty awful. The star tip, makes it look all pretty! When all this was finished (late Sunday night) I was ready for the party!

And there they are! OH’s mum got me a cake stand as well, so they were set off wonderfully! As you can see, the blue was much lighter than the red, but I had no complaints! And they looked fab, even if I do say so myself!

After all this, it was time to relax and enjoy the party, which we did, I even managed to catch a little sun! Which now, on Wednesday has long gone, and the rain has come back. But still, at least we had a lovely day for celebrating!  Here’s a pic of OH and I enjoying a nice cup of tea in the sun! As you can see, nobody disappointed when it came to the dress code!

Back to the crafty posts in the morning!

I hope you have a great day whatever you’re up to,

Jubilee Monday – Final Souvenir Card

Hi there!

I have had a busy weekend preparing for the jubilee party with OH’s family today, but wanted to share my last piece of related craftiness! This is a simple jubilee card I made using some Union Flag ribbon and coordinating red (I know it looks orange in the photo, but it’s red honest) paper and some related peel-offs. I used a blue pearlescent card. This is more than likely going to hold some photos in my scrapbook so I have left the front with enough space to fit a small photo.

I will share tomorrow what I spent the weekend preparing, which was also something quite new for me (read: experiment) and I’m quite proud of the results! Now though I have to go and get ready!

Hope you have a great Monday whatever you’re up to today!

Jubilee Souvenir Cross-Stitch

Hi there!

The diamond jubilee is almost here, and for a change I have done some cross-stitch for myself! This is a simple design I came up with because I wanted something to keep that wasn’t something loads of people would have (seriously, why for all of these occasions are there mugs and cups? I have mugs and cups!) and so I decided to design something myself!

This was really quick and easy to stitch. I wanted something simple, that  I could simply put away as a memento of the occasion, so I chose my colours (it didn’t take long to pick red and blue) stitched two diamonds, and the dates of the jubilee, and added the EIIR logo in yellow (I wasn’t gonna get out the metallics again). I’m really happy with how it turned out, and it’s something I could match with any other events if I choose to (I’m already planning a London 2012 Olympics piece to go with this one) and simply have to match the size of the aida. This was also a great use for an otherwise fairly useless piece of fabric, as it’s too small for most patterns.

I’m going to have a fun jubilee bank holiday weekend, baking cakes for a party with OH’s family on Monday. Let’s just hope the weather holds out, after the wonderful sun of last weekend, things have become a lot more grey again now. Are you doing anything to celebrate the jubilee where you are?

Have you made any souvenirs for the jubilee? Feel free to share on the Facebook page, I’d love to see what people have been up to!

Have a great Friday!

Jubilee in Red

Hi there!

I have quite a busy day ahead of me today, and shortly I’m off out, before I go however, I thought I’d share Jubilee in Red…

As I mentioned just over a week ago, I’ve been working on some cards, which could be used as invitations or place cards for a jubilee event (or any other royal event for that matter) The second I’m going to share, is my “place card” which features a simple cross-stitch crown (as featured in a recent issue of Cross-Stitcher magazine, on a Made in Britain birth sampler) stitched in red on some coordinating blue cardstock. This is then glued onto a Papermania 3×3 cream card blank. (you could use white of course, I was just using what I had laying around).

These are really simple, though of course these could also be done using metallic threads, shiny card, with Union Flags as backing… Or whatever you’d like to use to work with the theme of your event! Change the colours entirely, and you could have a birthday card for a little prince or princess!

The difference between the two cards (other than the slightly different cross-stitch design and the colour) was simply the fold, back in Jubilee in Blue, I referred to it as my “invitation card” simply as it is a traditional side folded card. This card would make a good place card as it is tent folded, and so would stand up nicely on a table. Alternatively, you could make either of them into tags for gift bags or presents.

Have a lovely day whatever you’re up to

Jubilee in Blue

Hi there!

It’s been a while, I’ve had quite a lot going on, not to mention preparing for a job interview I have tomorrow! (Fingers crossed!).

I have however been crafting away behind closed doors, and it’s quite an exciting time to be working on all sorts of projects! I’ve been getting into jubilee spirit this week, and have made a few cards, which could be used for invitations or even place cards – which might inspire you if you’re going to be throwing a party, barbecue or  other event this June. I have also been playing around with my bead cards, which are still loads of fun to make!

That’s not al!l Coming up in the next week or so, I’ve also been stitching, and I have the big reveal of the “Big Gift Project” (as seen here and here) which was fun to work on, though I am glad to be able to play around with some other ideas now it’s finished! I’m still working on the ABC scrapbooking project, and finally have gotten around to taking the photos for my delayed “I” layout, and should update the post with my layout and put a whole album on the Facebook Page, within the next couple of days!

As I mentioned at the top of the post, I’ve been working on some cards, which could be used as invitations or place cards for a jubilee event (or any other royal event for that matter) The first I’m going to share, is my “invitation card” which features a simple cross-stitch crown (as featured in the latest issue of Cross-Stitcher magazine, on a Made in Britain birth sampler) stitched in blue on some coordinating red cardstock. I’ve gone back to my tiny cards (you may remember these from my “Just a Little…” series) of course these could be done using metallic threads on shiny card, with Union Flags as backing… Or whatever you’d like to use to work with the theme of your event! This design was simple and fun to stitch (could be great for beginners). It’d be easy to make a few of these in an evening too!

So I’m now off out for the morning, got to go to the post office today too! What fun!

Have a great day whatever you’re up to!
